Riding through the winter in San Miguel de Allende
Snowbirds wintering in San Miguel de Allende can keep riding at Rancho Baile de la Luna, 20 minutes from town. Adults take private lessons in English with Amy Spencer, a CHA-certified instructor, and riders can lease a horse part-time for $5,000 MXN a month or full-time for $10,000 MXN a month, with care included.
A season, not a single ride
Many of our neighbors arrive in late October and stay until April, which is also the best riding of the year: dry, sunny, and cool in the mornings. A few months is long enough to build a real partnership with one horse.
Lessons in English
Adult lessons are with Amy Spencer, a Certified Horsemanship Association instructor who is fluent in English and Spanish: one-hour private sessions, usually Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, in Western, English, or Dressage, with a focus on groundwork, biomechanics, and centered riding. Visiting grandchildren can ride with Roberto, usually Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. See lessons.
Lease a horse for the winter
| Lease | Price | Riding |
|---|---|---|
| Part-time | $5,000 MXN a month | Three days a week |
| Full-time | $10,000 MXN a month | Any day |
Care is all-inclusive: farrier, vet, deworming, dental, and chiropractic, with tack, wrangler support, a dressage arena, and working equitation obstacles. See leasing.
Or simply ride out
Guided trail rides go out most mornings, one to four riders, from $1,200 MXN. Bring friends visiting from home; it is the easiest way to show them the countryside. See prices in US dollars.
How do lessons work?
Adult lessons are with Amy Spencer, usually Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings: one-hour private sessions in Western, English, or Dressage, with a focus on groundwork, biomechanics, and centered riding. Kids' lessons are with Roberto, usually Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Other times can sometimes be arranged, and we can sometimes take two riders together, so ask about availability. Message us and we will find your first slot.
Do I need riding experience?
No. Most of our guests are beginners. We match each rider with a horse that fits their comfort level, give basic instruction before heading out, and keep the pace easy. Horses like Holly and Capitán have carried hundreds of first-time riders.
When is the best time of year to ride?
Every season has its argument, but the rainy season, June through September, is spectacular: the high desert turns deep green, wild sunflowers grow taller than a rider, and the trails to the river and the Presa de los Torres are at their best. Winter brings crisp golden light and cool mornings. Rain usually falls as brief afternoon showers, so morning rides run year round.
