Things to do in Atotonilco, Mexico

The Santuario de Atotonilco is a UNESCO World Heritage site, sometimes called the Sistine Chapel of Mexico for the murals covering nearly every wall and ceiling inside. It is a working church, not a museum, so visits are quiet and unhurried, and modest dress is appreciated. It sits at the center of the small town of Atotonilco, a few minutes from the ranch.

Two well-known hot springs sit just outside town: La Gruta, with warm pools and a tunnel leading to a steaming grotto, and Escondido Place, quieter and more spread out. Both make an easy stop before or after a morning in the campo, and both are minutes from the ranch and the Santuario.

Rancho Baile de la Luna is a real family ranch in Atotonilco, at San Miguelito, El Fresno. Trail rides run one to four riders, from $1,200 MXN for an hour, with beginners and single riders genuinely welcome. The street food around the Santuario is some of the best in the region, ask for Santo's stand, Sí Hay. For a sit-down meal, Coyote Flaco and Nirvana are both easy countryside stops nearby, unhurried and worth the short drive.
