Things to do in San Miguel de Allende, on horseback

Around San Miguel de Allende you can ride horseback through high desert countryside, take a breakfast ride to Nirvana, learn to ride, spend a non-riding day with a herd, or join a women's equine retreat, all at Rancho Baile de la Luna in Atotonilco, 20 minutes from town.

With us at the ranch

  • Trail rides, one to two hours, $1,200 to $1,600 MXN, one to four riders.
  • The Nirvana breakfast ride and El Macehual lunch ride, our signature outings.
  • The sunset ride, timed to golden hour.
  • Riding lessons, adults with Amy, kids with Roberto.
  • Spirit Horse Journeys, non-riding days with the herd, and women's retreats.

Around the corner from the ranch

Make a full day of it. The Santuario de Atotonilco, the UNESCO site nicknamed the Sistine Chapel of Mexico, is minutes away. The La Gruta and Escondido Place hot springs are perfect after a ride. The street food by the Santuario is some of the best in the region (ask for Santo's stand, Sí Hay), and country restaurants like Coyote Flaco and Nirvana make an afternoon of lunch. Our journal has a full local guide.

Quick questions
Where exactly is the ranch?

Rancho Baile de la Luna is at San Miguelito 10, El Fresno, in Atotonilco, about 20 minutes outside San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico. We are minutes from the Santuario de Atotonilco, the UNESCO World Heritage site, and the La Gruta and Escondido hot springs.

When is the best time of year to ride?

Every season has its argument, but the rainy season, June through September, is spectacular: the high desert turns deep green, wild sunflowers grow taller than a rider, and the trails to the river and the Presa de los Torres are at their best. Winter brings crisp golden light and cool mornings. Rain usually falls as brief afternoon showers, so morning rides run year round.

How do I book?
