What is an equine retreat?

An equine retreat is a ground-based experience where you work beside gentle horses, with no riding or experience required, to build calm, clarity, and confidence, because horses respond honestly to what you feel.

What an equine retreat actually is

An equine retreat brings people together with horses, on the ground, to notice how they show up, moment to moment. There is no performance and no test to pass. A facilitator holds the space, the herd responds honestly to whatever you are carrying, and the reflection that follows is where the work happens.

Do you have to ride

No. At Rancho Baile de la Luna the retreats and Spirit Horse Journeys are entirely ground-based. You walk beside the horses, stand with them, sometimes simply breathe near them. No riding and no prior horse experience is needed, at any point.

How horses help with stress and clarity

Horses are large, honest animals who read posture and intention faster than most people read words, and they do not flatter. Standing near one, on the ground, tends to slow a busy mind down. Many guests describe leaving calmer and clearer than they arrived, though this is presence and attention, not a medical treatment.

Equine wisdom work versus clinical therapy

We call this equine wisdom work, not equine therapy. It is an adult, non-clinical, experiential practice held by trained facilitators, including an EAGALA Level 2 Certified Equine Specialist on our bench. It pairs well with psychotherapy for guests already in it, but it is not a substitute for that care.

What a day looks like

Most days follow a simple shape: arrival, a morning circle, time with the herd on the ground, a break for a good meal, an afternoon session, and a closing moment together. The Fire Horse day and the six-day Four Agreements retreat both follow versions of this rhythm.

Who this is for

Anyone curious, whether you are navigating a transition, carrying stress, grieving, or simply want an honest day outdoors. No horse experience, no riding, and no particular fitness level is required. Our women-only circles are the Fire Horse series and the six-day retreat; the day journeys, private sessions, Reiki, and constellations are open to everyone.

Quick questions
Do I have to ride a horse at the retreats?

No. The retreats and Spirit Horse Journeys are ground-based: you work beside the horses on foot, not from the saddle. No riding and no horse experience is needed, ever.

Can horses help with anxiety, grief, or stress?

Many guests come away calmer. Horses are large, honest, present animals, and simply being near one, on the ground, breathing, slowing down, tends to settle a busy nervous system. This is not a medical treatment or a clinical claim, it is presence and attention, held by an experienced facilitator.

Is this equine therapy?

We call it equine wisdom work, not therapy. It is adult, ground-based, and non-clinical, held by trained facilitators. It complements psychotherapy well for guests who are already in it, but it does not replace it.

Are the retreats women-only?

The Fire Horse day series and the six-day Four Agreements retreat are women-only. The one-day Spirit Horse Journey, the two-day immersive, private sessions, Reiki, and constellations are open to everyone, and men are genuinely welcome there. Trail rides, lessons, and leasing are open to all.
